Lab monitoring system
Sinton Lab
Date
2024 Feb-2025 April
Objectives:
- Detect chemical leakage effectively.
- Determine human presence and set off alarm appropriately.
I led the design and development of a low-cost intelligent lab monitoring system for detecting chemical leakage and human presence in automated processing environments. The project aimed to enhance laboratory safety by continuously monitoring ambient conditions and dynamically determining appropriate alarm levels based on both environmental risk and human proximity.
The resulting system, developed for under 100 CAD, integrates a millimeter-wave radar sensor to detect human presence within a 5-meter range, along with time-of-flight, light, environmental, and gas sensors for comprehensive environmental monitoring. A Kalman filter was embedded to improve sensor robustness and data reliability. The system is capable of identifying critical chemical leakage events and issuing graded alarms to promptly alert nearby operators, significantly improving safety in automated laboratory settings.
